Over the last decade, I’ve worn a lot of different hats. I’ve worked as a school teacher, navigated the fast-paced world of real estate, and even served as a personal assistant to a high-powered talent manager.
If there is one universal truth I’ve uncovered from ten years in the grind, it’s this: there is a tax for doing jobs you enjoy.
Growing up I remember hearing the cliche, "Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life". I was taught from a young age to pursue paths that fill my days with laughter, enjoyment, and genuine happiness. But what they don't tell you is that the market often penalizes passion.
Behind the Scenes of a $30,000 Luxury
I’ll never forget my first day working as a talent manager’s assistant. Right out of the gate, a very famous actor walked into the office. I remember standing there thinking, Wow, this is incredible. I get to meet celebrities, get behind-the-scenes looks at upcoming projects, and see how the entertainment industry actually works.
On paper, it was the definition of a "cool job." I got free screenings and even previewed movies being voted on for the Oscars. But the reality behind the curtain was a different story.
The salary was $30,000 a year.
Anyone who has ever lived in New York City knows that $30,000 is, quite frankly, unlivable. To earn that below-minimum-wage feeling, I was grinding through 10-hour workdays. While I am incredibly grateful for the experience and the lessons it taught me, the economics of the role quickly made sense.
The job paid pennies because the employer knew someone would always be willing to accept it just for the perks. The proximity to fame and the cultural prestige were currency enough to keep a steady stream of eager applicants at the door.
But you can’t pay rent with prestige.
The downside of the "passion tax" is stark. You can’t afford your own apartment. You can barely afford basic groceries. You can't go out with friends because your bank account won't allow it. And after working a 10-hour day, the only way to survive is to get a second job just to subsidize the first one.
The Ultimate Trade-Off
There is a logical reason why doctors and lawyers—who endure what can be over 10 years of rigorous schooling—command massive salaries. Their jobs are highly specialized, high-stakes, and inherently high-stress. The market compensates them for the heavy burden of responsibility they carry every single day.
But it forces us to ask a fundamental question: Is the trade-off worth it?
Is it better to endure a stressful, high-stakes career that doesn't ignite an internal fire, simply because it grants you the financial freedom to build a beautiful life outside of work? Or do you pay the passion tax and sacrifice your lifestyle for the sake of the daily grind?
Finding the Best of Both Worlds
As an entrepreneur, I refused to accept either compromise. I wanted the best of both worlds: meaningful work surrounded by people I care about, combined with the financial leverage to build the life I’ve always dreamed of—not just for myself, but for my family and the people who depend on me.
Because we only get one shot at this life. With all the possible things we could be doing with our limited time on this planet, we have to be incredibly intentional about what we choose to build.
Every single day, I refocus on my "Why." Personally, I love building businesses. I love the overarching strategy, analyzing different business models to see what works, optimizing systems, and finding a more efficient path to growth. I love creating videos, building digital assets, and watching passive income streams grow.
More than anything, I love passing on the knowledge I’ve gleaned from my own trials and errors so that others can skip the painful learning curves. That is exactly why my business centers around evergreen content and selling knowledge. My digital courses represent my best, battle-tested methods for achieving passive income, because it completely transformed my life—and I know it can better yours, too.
What Are You Building For?
So, I pose this question to you: Why are you building your business?
What purpose drives your actions, your life, and the contributions you want to leave behind?
Are you building to break free from the chains of a job that drains your energy?
Are you building because corporate stability is a myth, and you want to rely on yourself rather than a corporate gatekeeper to support your family?
Are you building a legacy that you can pass down to your children, giving them the financial baseline to pursue their passions without worrying about survival?
Everyone’s motivation is entirely different, but the end goal is usually the same: true autonomy.
